PORTRAIT COURSE OUTLINE
Simply put, this four session course is designed to help you develop an ability to achieve a likeness no matter what your level of ability is. Beginners are welcome. Nobody paints a Rembrandt first time out!
We will use live models and I will teach by demonstration. First I will draw in 5 to 10 minute segments, then you will work on your own portrait using my drawing and description as a guide. I will assist and suggest, but not criticize.
The first session will be an exercise in the basics. We’ll work on shapes, features and proportions. We’ll then do a charcoal or sepia drawing of the model.
Session 2, will start out similarly, but this time we’ll add highlights to define shapes.
Session 3 and 4, we will add colour.
Here is a Materials list
* 2 sheets of Canson Mi Tientes pastel paper (or equivalent) in a warm gray or sand colour. Do not use white, cream or dark colours. We will be using a half sheet for each drawing. If budget is a concern, I find that a pad of craft paper available at Curry’s or DeSerre’s for under $4.00 works nearly as well, and because it’s cheap, it’s not as intimidating. I will be using it to demonstrate the first night, but switch to the good stuff for the model.
* Box of soft pastels. Mungyo are inexpensive and work quite well.
* 1 black pastel or charcoal pencil (soft)
* 1 dark brown pastel pencil
* 1 Burnt Umber NuPastel
* 1 white pastel pencil
* a 16×20 board (Masonite or something stiff) as a support
* a few sheets of newsprint or other paper for padding under drawing.
* White eraser
I have a large selection of pastels, so if you’re missing a desired colour, you can borrow from me.
